Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation, the
Norwood City Health Department provides “LifeSkills” curriculum to all
3rd and 6th grade students in the Norwood City
School District and St. Nicholas Academy. This nationally recognized
youth prevention program introduces students to the short and long
term effects of tobacco on the body, deceptive advertising, self
esteem, and refusal techniques. Each student is given their own
manual during the classes that can be taken home and shared with
other family members. “LifeSkills” has proven to be effective in
delaying the onset of teen smoking and preventing many from
beginning smoking.
The Norwood City Health Department also collaborates with the Norwood
City Schools to provide “Alternative to Suspension,” a program founded
by the American Cancer Society for middle and high school
students. At the Norwood Middle and High Schools, students who were
found to have cigarettes, lighters or both for the first time may opt
to take part in the “Alternative to Suspension” program instead of
being suspended from school. The student must take part in two 60
minute interactive sessions that reinforce health effects of tobacco,
signs of nicotine addiction, alternatives to tobacco, and tips for
teens to quit as well as a review of the school policy regarding
tobacco possession and use.
The Norwood City Health Department is an active member of the
“Hamilton County Tobacco-Free Partnership.” The goal of the
partnership is to eliminate tobacco use and its burden in Hamilton
County. Partnership members provide prevention and cessation
activities and the partnership is a wonderful resource for educational
materials and presentations. For more information about scheduling a
presentation, information about prevention and/or cession programs or
