Bureau for Children with Medical
Handicaps (BCMH) |
BCMH is a program provided by the state of Ohio to assist
families with children with special health care needs. Some of
the eligible conditions include: AIDS, Cancer, Cerebral Palsy,
Chronic Lung Disease, Cleft Lip/Palate, Congenital Heart Disease,
Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Hearing Loss, Hemophilia, Juvenile
Arthritis (JRA), Metabolic Disorders, Scoliosis, Severe Vision
Disorders, Sickle Cell Disease, and Spina Bifida.
BCMH has three
programs that may be able to help children with special health care
needs.
The Diagnostic Program
Children may receive services for
three months to rule out, diagnose a condition or establish a plan of
treatment. The services must be completed by a BCMH approved provider
and may include services such as X-rays, up to five days in the
hospital, therapy evaluations, tests and Public Health Nurse
Services.
There
are no financial requirements for use of this program.
The Treatment Program
Children
may receive services for one year if diagnosed with an eligible
condition. The child must be treated for that condition by a BCMH
approved provider. Treatment service may include prescription
medications, medical equipment, laboratory testing, therapies,
surgeries, hospitalizations and Public Health Services. All services
must be related to the child’s eligible condition. If the child
remains eligible, services may be renewed yearly until the child
reaches age 21.
Both
Medical and Financial eligibility are required for Treatment Services.
The Service Coordination Program
This program
assists families with children with specific conditions to coordinate
care with multiple specialists and medical teams.
